Coalition: States must up anti-smoking funds to preserve health gains

With smoking rates at a standstill after nearly a decade of decline, the nation's progress in reducing smoking is at risk unless states significantly increase funding for programs to prevent kids from smoking and help smokers quit, warns a report released Dec. 6 by the Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids, American Heart Association, American Cancer Society and American Lung Association.
 
Mayo study: Arthritis more severe for smokers

New findings from a study led by a Mayo Clinic rheumatologist indicate that men with knee osteoarthritis who smoke experience greater cartilage loss and more severe pain than men who do not smoke. Knee osteoarthritis is one of the leading causes of disability in elders.
 
Citizens for a smoke-free Minnesota to gather at Capitol Jan. 30

Citizen advocates who support a Smoke-Free Minnesota will gather at the State Capitol in St. Paul on Tuesday, January 30, 2007 from 7:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.  Participating in the Smoke Free Minnesota Day at the Capitol is an easy and fun way to show your support for comprehensive smoke-free workplace legislation.
 
Grant County's Herman votes tobacco-free playgrounds

On October 16, 2006, the Herman City Council voted to adopt a tobacco-free policy that covers the city's playground areas.  Herman becomes the fourth city in Grant County to adopt a tobacco-free park policy.  Grant County Kids Against Tobacco requested the policy of the Herman City Council, and Borders United for Smoke-Free Air is assisting Herman city officials in promoting the new policy.
 
Clean air to spare in Minnesota's smoke-free bowling alleys

Clean, healthy air is important in all recreational settings, including bowling. Bowlers who are nonsmokers often have to choose between their health and going bowling. More than 20 bowling centers in Minnesota have gone 100 percent smoke-free, and the Tobacco-Free Youth Recreation program is helping more bowling centers create smoke-free policies and spare the health of their customers and employees.
 
U of M tobacco control researcher gets global award

Harry Lando, one of the world's preeminent researchers in the area of tobacco prevention and control, will receive the University of Minnesota’s 2006 Award for Global Engagement Nov. 30, the university has announced. Lando has published more smoking intervention trials than anyone else in the world and has helped to position the University of Minnesota as a leader on the world stage.
 
Common ground for state's new leadership: Freedom to Breathe

Bipartisan cooperation in the new state government can begin with protecting all Minnesotans from secondhand smoke in their workplaces, the Minnesota Smoke-Free Coalition is urging.  "Protecting Minnesotans' freedom to breathe clean air has always been an issue with strong support across party lines," said Pat McKone, President-elect of the Minnesota Smoke-Free Coalition. "As the new and returning leadership in St. Paul starts to build a common-ground agenda, the statewide Freedom to Breathe Act is one building block that is already in place."
 
Voters Approve Record Six Anti-tobacco Ballot Initiatives to Reduce Smoking, Save Lives

In Mankato, South Dakota, Appleton, Wis.. and across the nation, "Voters across America on Tuesday dealt decisive defeats to the tobacco industry," said  William V. Corr, executive director of Campaign for Tobacco-Free Kids.  Voters "approved an unprecedented six statewide ballot initiatives to require smoke-free workplaces, increase tobacco taxes and fund tobacco prevention programs. In approving these initiatives, voters rejected multi-million dollar campaigns by the tobacco industry to deceive them and sent a loud and clear message to elected officials at all levels: Reject the special interests of the tobacco industry and protect the public interest by supporting proven measures to reduce tobacco use and exposure to secondhand smoke."
 
Mayo joins with media group for 'EX,' a modern smoking-cessation campaign

The American Legacy Foundation, with Mayo Clinic providing clinical expertise, has developed cessation materials for the pilot phase of EX, an innovative new multi-channel program designed to help people stop smoking. The campaign is being test marketed in four U.S. cities from fall 2006 through spring 2007. Dr. Richard Hurt, director of Mayo Clinic's Nicotine Dependence Center. "Our Center has helped more than 33,000 people with tobacco dependence, and through this collaboration we can help even more people to stop smoking and live healthier and longer lives.
 
Dakota County group seeks smoke-free supporters

Doctors and citizens in Dakota County are expanding their efforts to promote smoke-free policies in their communities on the southeast side of the Twin Cities metropolitan area.  Calling themselves the Dakota County Smoke-Free Communities Partnership, the group is reaching out to people in the county to begin the discussion of smoke-free policies and has launched a web site, www.smokefreedakota.org.
